Ex-Verrill Dana partner gets jail time
A federal judge on Thursday sentenced former Verrill Dana law partner John Duncan to 28 months in prison for stealing more than $300,000 from the Portland law firm and its clients between 1997 and 2007.
Duncan pled guilty to four counts of tax evasion for diverting $305,000 from the firm and clients into his personal bank account and failing to claim the money on his personal tax returns, according to a press release from the U.S. Department of Justice. The counts include tax years 2003 through 2006, for a total tax loss of $59,930. Besides 28 months behind bars, Duncan also was ordered to pay a $10,000 fine and almost $1,000 in court fees. Duncan already has paid restitution to the IRS and the firm, according to the release.
Duncan, who was fired in October from the law firm after his thefts were discovered, pled guilty in June to theft charges in Cumberland County Superior Court and is scheduled to be sentenced on that charge Sept. 18, according to the Portland Press Herald.
