Fabian Oil to pay EPA $50K

Oakland-based Fabian Oil has agreed to pay $50,000 to settle claims with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

The company, which also has locations in Augusta, Jay and Thomaston, agreed to the fine to settle claims that its facilities were not properly prepared to handle oil spills, according to the Portland Press Herald. The EPA found the company's spill-prevention plans insufficient after inspections in 2009 and 2010. Since the inspections, Fabian has updated its plans and begun implementation, including upgrading its equipment and testing the structural integrity of its storage tanks.

Fabian sells heating oil, gasoline and other petroleum products.
