Fairchild to lay off 120

Three weeks after announcing impending layoffs, Fairchild Semiconductor in South Portland has confirmed it intends to trim its staff by 120 workers over the next nine months.

The cuts will affect workers at the company's plant on Western Avenue, which currently employs 500, according to the Portland Press Herald. Fairchild, which makes silicon chips for electronics, will shut down a production line that makes 6-inch silicon wafers and instead focus on another product. The layoffs are part of a restructuring effort to increase the company's competitiveness both domestically and globally, according to the paper.

Fairchild employs 800 people statewide and also has manufacturing plants in Salt Lake City, Pennsylvania and South Korea.
