FairPoint 911 contract stands

FairPoint Communications has finally secured a $32 million contract to upgrade the state's 911 emergency communication system, following year-long appeals from competitors.

The Bangor Daily News reported that no appeals were filed after the state awarded the contract to FairPoint for a third time, securing the deal for the communications company that held the state's previous 911 communication contract.

FairPoint will begin to install a NextGen 911 system to convert the state system to an Internet-based infrastructure that can handle location data and other information to aid first responders.

The paper reported that state officials project the upgrade, originally planned for completion by August 2013, will be pushed back a year.
