FairPoint delays final Verizon takeover

FairPoint Communications yesterday said it is extending by two months its final takeover of Verizon's telephone business in New England.

FairPoint now is scheduled to complete the transition by January 2009, according to a press release from the company. The decision was made following an evaluation of what still needed to be done before the transition was successful, and after consulting with public service organizations from Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont.

Fred Bever, a spokesperson for the Maine Public Utilities Commission, told the Portland Press Herald that the Maine PUC prefers the job be done correctly, not quickly. "A delay is preferable to widespread service problems," he said.
