A Las Vegas gaming company this morning said it has acquired the Maine company pushing to build a casino somewhere in Oxford County.
The Olympia Group, which opened its first casino in Las Vegas in 2003, at a press conference this morning in Portland said it has acquired Evergreen Mountain Enterprises LLC and the campaign's PAC from founder Seth Carey, a Rumford lawyer, for an undisclosed amount. The question of whether to allow a Maine-owned casino somewhere in Oxford County will be on the Nov. 4 ballot. (Read Mainebiz's July 2006 profile of Carey and his plans for an Oxford County casino in "Long odds".)
If voters approve the measure, Olympia executive Dean Harrold said Olympia plans to build a $100 million, four-season resort in Oxford County and that the company's gaming division will consider the resort the "cornerstone of the company." Harrold estimated the resort would gross $100 million its first year and would expect to return roughly 49% of that to the state in the form of taxes. The resort also is expected to create more than 800 jobs.
Pat LaMarche, who previously had stepped down as spokeswoman for Carey's campaign, has rejoined the effort. She said at the press conference that Olympia Gaming, which will be headed by Harrold, will start scouting sites and have chosen a location before the election.
