Family co. eyes expansion as next generation takes over

Portland-based Richard P. Waltz Plumbing & Heating Co. is changing hands and eyeing expansions to central Maine.

Richard P. Waltz III, whose grandfather founded the company in 1936, is taking over the family business from his father, Richard P. Waltz Jr.

Joe Charlton, a spokesman and consultant for the company, told Mainebiz that the company is considering satellite locations in Lewiston-Auburn, Augusta-Waterville and Sanford to expand the business. It is also stepping up marketing efforts.

"A big part of the new strategy is e-marketing and regular e-newsletters," Charlton said. "Facebook is a big part of that and that's what we're tackling right now."

Charlton said the company, which provides plumbing, heating and other home improvement services, is evaluating expansion costs and plans to move forward with a plan this spring.

According to a press release, Richard Waltz III began taking on greater leadership responsibilities at the company in the late 1990s when his father became ill.

"My hope is that our next 76 years are as successful as the first 76," Waltz said in the release.
