Fed funds arrive for laid-off Biddeford workers

Maine is receiving over $500,000 in federal stimulus aid to assist about 150 workers laid off this year in Biddeford.

The $553,237 National Emergency Grant, funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, will help workers laid off when blanket manufacturer WestPoint Home closed this summer, according to a press release from Rep. Chellie Pingree's office. The Maine Department of Labor will administer the funding through Coastal Counties Workforce, which will coordinate career retraining programming for the laid-off workers.

New York-based WestPoint Home closed the Biddeford mill and two other facilities in June. The mill was the last operating textile mill in the city. For more on the impact of its closure, see "Where possibilities loom" from the June 15, 2009, issue of Mainebiz.
