Federal stimulus to bring more than $1B to ME

Maine expects to receive more than $1 billion from the $787 billion federal stimulus package that President Obama signed yesterday.

Maine could receive approximately $470 million for the state's Medicaid costs, $347 million for education and $133 million for transportation projects, according to staff estimates from Sen. Olympia Snowe's office. Gov. John Baldacci yesterday signed an executive order directing legislative oversight of how the money will be used in Maine. The public will be able to track how Maine uses the money at the State of Maine American Recovery and Reinvestment Act website.

Baldacci also named Ryan Low, commissioner for the Department of Administrative and Financial Services, as the state coordinator for managing stimulus funds, according to a press release from the governor's office.
