The Aroostook Dental Clinic in Presque Isle is receiving $208,000 in federal funds to help maintain its level of pediatric care to hundreds of children in the county.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Rural Development office announced on Tuesday that Aroostook Dental will receive a $158,000 loan and a $50,000 grant to purchase a building its currently leasing, and to upgrade that building's accessibility features.
With two-thirds of dentists in Maine over the age of 50 — and a disproportionately high share of them located in Cumberland, Kennebec and Penobscot counties — maintaining dental care in rural areas has been a pressing issue for the state, as previously reported by Mainebiz.
The federal funding, which also included grants for an Aroostook County school district and a Passamaquoddy Tribe administrative building in Princeton, is provided as part of the Rural Development office's Community Facility Program.
