Feds give $2.5M to Maine housing authorities
The Maine State Housing Authority is receiving the majority of a more than $2.5 million grant from the federal government to help residents obtain affordable housing.
U.S. Sens. Susan Collins and Angus King announced on Monday that the funds will come from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
The Maine State Housing Authority will use $2 million of the grant to provide rental assistance to low-income people with disabilities.
The Lewiston Housing Authority and Portland Housing Authority will receive $196,391 and $341,132 respectively for the Resident Opportunities and Self Sufficiency program, which helps housing authorities hire or retain “service coordinators” who work directly with residents to help them become self-sufficient with educational opportunities and job training.
“This funding is a step forward in supporting individuals and families in Maine who need assistance in gaining safe and affordable housing,” Collins and King said in a joint statement. “These programs help those in need to live as independently as possible and provide new opportunities to help Mainers succeed.”
