Maine housing projects get $1M in grants

Five affordable housing initiatives in Maine are receiving a total of more than $1 million in grants from a national nonprofit that was established by Congress.

U.S. Sens. Susan Collins and Angus King announced on Monday that the funds are being awarded by NeighborWorks America, a public nonprofit that provides financial and grant support, along with other forms of assistance to local and regional nonprofits.

“For many low-income people in Maine, having the ability to obtain affordable housing often makes the difference between having a roof over their head or not,” Collins and King said in a joint statement. “This funding will support individuals and families in Maine by helping them to attain housing within their means, all while building stronger communities in the process.”

The following Maine organizations received funding:

• Avesta Housing Development Corp., $454,695.

• CEI, $150,000.

• Community Concepts Inc., $241,055.

• Kennebec Valley Community Action Program Housing Services, $44,925.

• Penquis Community Action Program Inc., $223,250.
