Three firms, including one based in Maine, are in the running to operate the former Navy airport at the Brunswick Naval Air Station.
The Midcoast Regional Redevelopment Authority has pegged Northeast Air Service of Portland, FlightLevel Aviation of Norwood, Mass., and Hawthorne Corp. of Charleston, S.C., as potential airport operators, according to The Times Record. The three firms were the only companies out of 50 fixed base operators that responded to MRRA's July request for operators to manage the civilian reuse of the base's aviation facilities once the Navy leaves next January. MRRA plans to ask the firms for follow-up proposals that would detail how they would manage the airport, which the organization plans to use mainly as an aircraft maintenance, repair and overhaul facility, according to the paper.
MRRA trustees last week voted to formally request taking control of the 750-acre airfield at no cost.
