Feds to buy $16M in Maine blueberries

The U.S. Department of Agriculture will give a $16 million boost to Maine's blueberry industry, buying the fruit for federal food programs.

U.S. Rep. Mike Michaud announced the USDA decision Friday. The federal purchase was requested by the Maine Wild Blueberry Commission to help address what farmers said is an oversupply of the crop in Maine this year.

Blueberry growers were expecting high yields at the start of this season. With 60,000 acres of fields, Maine is the country's top producer of wild blueberries.
