Fire-damaged Gardiner building to be razed
The city of Gardiner has cleared the way for a building in its historic downtown damaged by a fire this summer to be torn down.
The city had been working with the building owner, Wayne Chamberland, to find a way to rebuild the historic structure, but an engineering report estimated that it could cost $1.6 million.
The Kennebec Journal reported that the Gardiner Historic Preservation Commission granted Chamberland’s request for a certificate of appropriateness to demolish the building. Chamberland had offered to give the building to the city, but city councilors declined.
Patrick Wright, who is leading the downtown’s revitalization efforts with Gardiner Main Street, has said that losing a building damaged by the downtown fire would present a challenge to the effort.
