Fire damages Mt. Abram lodge

A fire sparked by lightning has severely damaged the lodge at Mt. Abram ski resort in Greenwood.

The fire at the 50-year-old main lodge started around 6:30 p.m. yesterday after either the building itself or the nearby mountain was struck by lightning, according to reports from news channel WMTW-8 and the Sun Journal. More than 100 firefighters battled the blaze at the three-story building, which houses the ski resort's general offices, a café and a gift shop. No employees were inside at the time, and an estimated amount of damage was not available. The fire marshal's office plans to investigate the cause today.

Opened in 1960, Mt. Abram has 44 trails and two lodges. In 2008, Rob Lally, a real estate developer from Boston, and real estate investor Matt Hancock bought the resort for nearly $1 million. Last year, the partners announced plans to install a two-acre solar field and new energy efficient snowmaking guns by the 2011 ski season.
