Fire destroys popular Belfast eatery
A Chinese restaurant in the town of Belfast was destroyed early Sunday morning in a fire that four people living in an upstairs apartment narrowly escaped, the Bangor Daily News reported on Monday.
The first call came in around 1:15 a.m. but was reported as a vehicle fire, according to Belfast Fire Chief James Richards. Crews then spent five hours fighting the blaze at Ming’s Chinese Restaurant, at 185 Searsport Ave., returning later in the morning to spend another two hours dousing down hot spots and ensuring the fire wouldn’t ignite.
Richards told the BDN that the upstairs residents were able to make it downstairs before the fire spread too far, saying, “They’re lucky.”
No one was injured in the blaze.
A state fire marshal’s office investigator was due to visit the site Monday, the paper reported.
Belfast, a 6,700-population coastal town that’s been home to Front Street Shipyard since 2010, has emerged an attractive place to live in recent years and a growing reputation as a yachting and tourist destination, though that has also brought new challenges including a lack of affordable housing.
