Secretary of State Charlie Summers has appointed Jay Martin of Stillwater as the state's first small business advocate, a position created this summer with the passage of the regulatory reform law.
As small business advocate, Martin is charged with staffing the Regulatory Fairness Board, hearing testimony from business owners and reporting to the Legislature and Gov. Paul LePage on regulatory changes needed to help the state's business climate, according to a press release. Martin, a Bangor native, helped expand popular Bangor-based Coffee News publication franchise throughout the United States, and also worked for the Washington Hancock Community Agency, a community action program in Ellsworth and Milbridge. He previously worked for Bangor-based United Cerebral Palsy of Maine, where he facilitated the agency's acquisition of the Elizabeth Levinson Center.
The small business advocate will reach out to small businesses of 50 employees or fewer that are addressing state regulatory concerns, with a focus on resolving enforcement actions, according to the release.
