Officials from Massachusetts-based First Wind are planning to meet with town leaders and residents next week to discuss the results of its tests to put a wind farm on Bowers Mountain in Penobscot County.
The state's largest industrial wind power producer placed three test towers near the 1,127-foot summit in November and December to determine if the wind conditions are suitable for a wind farm. Company officials will meet town leaders and residents on Feb. 8 and outline their plans, John Lamontagne, a company spokesman, told the Bangor Daily News.
Lamontagne said the Bowers Mountain test site is close to First Wind's 40-turbine Rollins Mountain project that encompasses ridgelines in Burlington, Lee, Lincoln and Winn. That project has received Maine Department of Environmental Protection and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers approvals, though a citizens group has filed an appeal of the DEP permit. Lamontagne told the paper that First Wind has a good relationship with residents in the Rollins Mountain area and that may bode well if the company proceeds with any work on the Bowers Mountain test site.
First Wind also operates the 42-megawatt Mars Hill and the 57-megawatt Stetson Mountain wind farms. Construction of the 26-megawatt Stetson II project will be completed this spring, while the DEP approved the proposed 51-megawatt Oakfield project on Jan. 21.
