A ridge in northwestern Maine could be the site of another wind farm by First Wind, the state's largest wind power developer.
The Massachusetts-based company told Piscataquis County commissioners yesterday it is considering building as many as 35 wind turbines along a ridge in Kingsbury Plantation and Blanchard Township, near Bingham, according to the Bangor Daily News. The plan is in its early stages, and the company must still gather wind speed data and conduct other studies. A First Wind spokesman told the paper that data collection will likely take a year, and a review by the Department of Environmental Protection another six months. Commissioners did not say yesterday whether they would support the project if it advances.
First Wind, which operates the Stetson wind farm in Down East Maine and the Mars Hill farm in northern Maine, recently received approval from Washington County commissioners for a proposed 26-turbine wind farm on Bowers Mountain. The company also is slated to begin construction on a wind farm on Rollins Mountain in northern Penobscot County in the coming months.
