Earl scare causes traffic tumble

The threat of Hurricane Earl is being blamed for a nearly 20% drop in turnpike traffic on the Friday before Labor Day weekend.

Maine Turnpike Authority Toll Supervisor Duane Douglass told the Portland Press Herald that about 31,000 vehicles came north through the York tollbooth on Friday, a nearly 20% drop from the same day last year. Traffic rebounded on Saturday, with 28,500 cars coming into the state, a less than 5% increase over the same day last year. On Monday, the number of vehicles heading south was slightly down from last year.
