First Wind plans Aroostook wind farm

First Wind, developer of the Mars Hill wind farm in Aroostook County, is eyeing another northern Maine location for a wind development.

The Newton, Mass.-based company announced yesterday that it has filed a permit application with the Maine Department of Environmental Protection to build a 51-megawatt wind farm in Oakfield, according to a press release from the company. The proposed farm's 34 turbines would produce enough energy to power more than 20,000 homes, lower taxes for Oakfield area residents and create jobs, according to the release.

First Wind also operates Stetson wind farm in Washington County and last month received approval from the Land Use Regulation Commission to build a 25.5-megawatt expansion there, according to another press release from the company. First Wind has also filed an application to build a 60-megawatt wind farm on Rollins Mountain near Lincoln, in Penobscot County.
