First Wind's Oakfield farm to grow

State regulators have given unanimous approval to First Wind's bid to expand its Oakfield wind farm from 34 to 50 turbines.

The Maine Department of Environmental Protection in January 2010 approved the Massachusetts-based developer's plan for a 51-megawatt wind farm in the Aroostook County town. Last June, First Wind filed an amendment to increase the size to 150 megawatts, according to a press release from the company. First Wind says the wind farm will generate enough power for more than 48,000 homes, and construction will create more than 300 jobs. In November, Oakfield residents approved a tax increment financing agreement that is expected to provide the town $14.7 million in tax revenues over 20 years, as well as an additional $12 million in community benefit payments.

Last year, a Supreme Judicial Court justice rejected an appeal of the wind farm by a local land trust.
