Treasurer Poliquin subject of Dems' complaint

The Maine Democratic Party has filed an ethics complaint against State Treasurer Bruce Poliquin for failing to disclose his businesses as areas of self-employment to the state. The announcement came the day after Rep. Mark Dion, D-Portland, wrote a letter to Maine Attorney General William Schneider asking him to weigh in on the matter.

According to a press release from the Democratic Party, Poliquin violated state law by not disclosing he serves as the clerk and registered agent of Dirigo Holdings LLC and the owner of the Popham Beach Club. The Maine Constitution bars state treasurers from engaging in commerce while serving in office. Yesterday, the Portland Press Herald published a column by Bill Nemitz questioning Poliquin's involvement. AG spokeswoman Brenda Kielty told Nemitz Schneider is reviewing Dion's letter.

Poliquin told him that his businesses are being handled by others. Republican lawmakers declined to comment on the issue, deferring instead to the attorney general, according to the Press Herald.
