Following EU decision, Swedish officials go solo on lobster concerns

Courtesy / Tom Thai, Flickr Swedish officials say they are still concerned about the possible impact live U.S. lobster imports could have on native lobster species.

Thought the recent news that the European Union put the brakes on a proposed ban on the import of live U.S. lobsters was the end of the story? Think again.

Swedish officials told the Associated Press that the country is still standing by its claims that there are scientific reasons to list the lobster as an invasive species, but said that it will look at tackling the issue on regional and national levels instead of through the EU.

The EU shot down the proposed ban this week after its Committee on Invasive Alien Species told Swedish officials that imported live U.S. lobster aren’t an invasive species. The proposed ban could have had a direct hit on the reportedly $200 million a year Maine export industry.
