Companies cut ties with egg producer

Allegations of animal cruelty at New England's largest egg producer have led a major egg distributor and franchisee to cease business with the company.

Eggland's Best of Jeffersonville, Pa., said it would sever ties with franchisee Radlo Foods because of the allegations surrounding Quality Egg of New England and Maine Contract Farms, both located in Turner, the Portland Press Herald reported. Radlo violated the strict animal welfare standards Eggland outlines in its contract, the company said. Radlo, based in Watertown, Mass., responded by announcing it would cease business with the farm and pledged to become "cage-free," according to a company press release.

Mercy for Animals conducted an undercover investigation of the farm and videotaped hens being abused and living in cramped cages, the paper reported.
