Doug Friedman, a former professional hockey player who played for the Edmonton Oilers and Nashville Predators, will succeed Bill Green as executive director of the Maine Sports Hall of Fame.

Green, who worked in television for decades before his retirement in 2019, will step down from the Maine Sports Hall of Fame after three and a half years in the role but remain on the board  board of directors.

“I am honored to be a part of the Maine Sports Hall of Fame and anxious to continue its tradition of honoring the best of the best in Maine sports,” said Friedman, who grew up in Cape Elizabeth and now lives in Kennebunkport.

Friedman starred in hockey at Boston University, where he was a captain his senior year. During his time at the university, he led the Terriers to three Frozen Fours and two appearances in the national title game. In 1994, was named New England’s top defensive forward.

NHL career

Friedman had a seven-year professional career with the National Hockey League in Edmonton, Canada, and Nashville, Tenn.

He was also assistant captain of the Hershey Bears in 1997, when the team won the Calder Cup.

Friedman's sports resume also includes serving as assistant captain with several teams, including the  Worcester (Mass.) Ice Cats. In 2016, Friedman was inducted into the Maine Sports Hall of Fame.

He currently serves as director of hockey operations at Boston University and will remain in that position as he takes on his new role, according to a news release.

“I can’t imagine a better selection than Doug,” said Brian Corcoran, founder and CEO of Shamrock Sports & Entertainment in Portland and member of the Maine Sports Hall of Fame board.  “We look forward to the next chapter of growth for the Maine Sports Hall of Fame under Doug Friedman’s management.”

The Maine Sports Hall of Fame was established in 1972 to recognize Maine high school scholar-athletes and to honor Maine athletes and sports figures who have brought distinction and honor to the state.

This year's induction ceremony, scheduled for Oct. 29 at Portland's Merrill Auditorium, will be aired on Maine Public Television and hosted by Bill Green, who will also serve as executive producer of the broadcast.
