Fort Kent hospital lays off 4

Northern Maine Medical Center has laid off four administrators and reduced remaining adminstrators' pay as part of restructuring efforts to stabilize its finances.

The Fort Kent hospital reduced administrator pay by 2% and consolidated departments in an effort to save it and its affiliates $428,000 over the next seven months, and $733,000 over a 12-month period, according to the Bangor Daily News. Administrative positions cut include public relations/community development director and respiratory therapy director. CEO Martin Bernstein told the paper that the changes were needed to offset a decline in patient activity, an increase in the number of patients covered by MaineCare and Medicare, and debt owed to the hospital. Bernstein said the cuts are not related to money the state owes it in MaineCare reimbursements.

The hospital has 49 beds and had 575 employees as of November.
