Freeport pursues local chamber of commerce

The town of Freeport is moving forward with efforts to create a chamber of commerce.

The Freeport Merchants Association and the Freeport Economic Development Corp., along with a separate task force, have asked the town for $145,000 in financial support to merge and form the Freeport Chamber and Marketing Alliance, according to The Forecaster. The Town Council said the town could direct funds from a tax-increment financing district for the Hilton Garden Inn and from the Destination Freeport TIF to the chamber, along with the $85,000 a year it contributes to FEDC and $12,500 to FMA. Other funds would come from membership dues.

The groups plan to start a membership drive by Aug. 1, and needs to attract at least 600 members by Dec. 15. Otherwise, FEDC and FMA will remain separate entities, according to the paper.
