Calif. co. buys Stonington Sea Products

A California company has acquired Stonington Sea Products, which sells smoked salmon and seafood products.

Rich Howe, president of Stonington Sea Products, told the Ellsworth American that the company has struggled over the years and "not succeeded in getting the volume necessary for success." Santa Barbara Smokehouse is 18 to 20 times larger than Stonington Sea Products, according to Howe. "When they approached us this spring, we jumped at the chance," he told the paper. Stonington Sea Products currently employs six workers, Howe said, but over the next couple years "there should be a serious expansion of that number." A sale price was not disclosed.

The company's name will be changed to The Smokehouse of Stonington, Maine, according to the paper. "This expansion is a perfect fit for our company," Tim Brown, president of Santa Barbara Smokehouse, said in a press release.
