Freeport shopping center opens

Despite lagging retail sales in Maine, a $30 million shopping complex in the center of Freeport staged a soft opening this weekend.

The Freeport Village Station opened with about six businesses in operation, including Nike, Brooks Brothers and Coach. A new store is scheduled to open every 10 days for the next several weeks, according to WMTW 8. By summer, about 75% of the building is expected to be occupied.

In March, retail sales in Maine decreased nearly 9% from March 2008 levels, according to the Maine State Planning Office.
