Camden's Select Board will consider a retroactive moratorium on franchise development in its downtown tomorrow, spurred by permits issued for a Dunkin' Donuts.
If approved, the moratorium would be retroactive to April 10 and extend for 180 days to allow the town to consider new ordinances for downtown development, according to the VillageSoup. More than 600 people signed a petition opposing the downtown doughnut shop; one activist said the shop would harm Camden's brand, making it less marketable, thereby affecting other downtown businesses.
The Camden shop still needs state and local permits to open. Applicants Chet and Tasha Mazakas of Active Investments LLC plan to spend $80,000 in renovations and lease 5 Elm St. for a 20-seat Dunkin' Donuts store, according to the online news service. Portland adopted an ordinance banning formula franchises in its downtown in 2006 that was later revised.
