Ah yes, this weekend is the day for America’s most favorite meal which consists of a baked bun, beef patty, onion, pickles, with optional cheese and condiments.
You guessed right, as we head into Memorial Day weekend, it's time to get the grills going because it is also National Hamburger Day.
National Hamburger Day is a yearly celebration on May 28, just in time for Memorial Day weekend. The day celebrates America’s iconic food which originated in Hamburg, Germany, but took on its modern form in Seymour, Wisc.
So what better way to kick off National Hamburger Day than talking about local burger restaurants?
Welcome back to the Friday Food Insider. Let's talk about some places you can enjoy a good hamburger or veggie burger this weekend.
Let’s begin in Bangor at Shakes & Bakes Takeout located at 599 Broadway in Bangor. The new takeout spot opened in May 2022. It serves milkshakes, gourmet burgers, chicken and more. This space occupies the former Broadway Citgo.
Fat Boy Drive-In is at 111 Bath Road in Brunswick. This nostalgic, 1950’s-inspired establishment is a classic American drive-in. It serves up burgers, fries and other favorites.
Looking for something vegan? Try Totally Awesome Vegan Food Truck, which serves all vegan “junk food” made by Portland chef Tony DiPhilipo. The food truck can be spotted around the area by their bright, 1980’s looking purple graphics. Check Instagram (@totallyawesomeveganfoodtruck) for locations and schedules.
In downtown Saco, family-owned Rapid Ray’s, a fast food takeout stand on Main Street has been cooking up burgers in southern Maine since 1953. Rapid Ray's is at 189 Main St. in Saco.
King Eiders Pub & Restaurant in Damariscotta is at 12 Elm St. Everything is locally sourced and environmentally friendly. Looking to change up the burger order, try the Maine crab burger.
Burger Budz in Sanford is at 1364 Main St. This family-friendly burger joint has anything one would want including smashed burgers, hand-cut fries, salad, chicken burgers and more. According to the website, you haven’t been to Burger Budz unless you have tried the Budz chili cheeseburger.
Butcher Burger serves a variety of burgers including a surf-and-turf burger, mini mac burger, Hawaiian burger and more. It operates two locations: 7 Union St. in Portland and 188 Main St. in Bethel.
Elsewhere in Portland, Nosh Kitchen Bar is at 551 Congress St. It is known for the large burgers and sandwiches. Nosh also offer a variety of snacks, entrees and interesting signature cocktails. Count me in!
If you are looking for a two-for-one special, this is the place. Beach Fire Bar & Grille, at 58 Main St. in Ogunquit, not only has burger options, but has cheeseburger dip. Sounds interesting, right? This dip has seasoned burger meat mixed with queso sauce and is served with tortilla chips. The menu also features a traditional burger and veggie burger. It's a one-stop shop.
And last but certainly not least, the Hamburger Stand Inc. in Biddeford, at 138 Elm St. This stand can be seen from afar with its bright blue roof. It has burgers, veggie burgers, fries, milkshakes, desserts and more. According to the website, their secret sauce is a must-try.
