After nearly a decade as executive director of the Maine Brewers' Guild, Sean Sullivan will leave his post at the end of March to pursue a master's degree in computer science at the Roux institute in Portland.

"I have made a professional move, but I am staying in Maine," Sullivan told Mainebiz in an email Monday. "All is well and I will remain working for the guild through the end of March, overseeing the New England Craft Brew Summit and also hopefully onboarding the new leader."

Sullivan said while the decision to leave the guild he's led since September 2013 was a difficult one, he made the decision after being accepted into the Roux's master of science — computer align program in Portland.

"I've been exploring the world of tech for years and looking forward to getting a formal education in computer science," he said.

In a letter to Maine Brewers' Guild members, Sullivan said he will serve part time from February through March and expects to officially step down by the end of March.

"As I've said to many of you," he wrote, "I love beer, but it's the talented and passionate individuals (you!) who have worked together to create this community that is recognized for its cooperation, inclusivity and 'help your neighbor' ethos that has made me so proud to represent you all in the media, before the government and at events. You all have introduced people all over Maine and beyond to quality, local beer and built a brand that attracts people from around the world to visit our state and to drink the beer you make."

A job listing for Sullivan's successor has already been posted on Brewbound, an industry trade publication.

Sullivan was honored on the Mainebiz Next list in 2016 for his contributions to Maine's economy. The New England Craft Brew Summit is scheduled to take place March 9 in Portland.
