From the Editor: 7 leaders that show Maine’s future is in good hands

The Next List was originally designed to highlight the people who were changing Maine’s economy, who were on the rise. Some of them were on the young side, but not all. It was more about the energy and vision a person was bringing to a project.

This year we present seven leaders who are carving out new territory.

Like a lot of businesspeople in the past 18 months, they’ve had their ups and downs. But how they responded is also part of why they’re being honored.

Here are some of my favorite quotes from the Q&As with these leaders:

From moment-to-moment we may not know exactly what is occurring in global finance systems, but we can very clearly see our Main Street activity.
— Garvan Donegan, Director of planning, innovation and economic development, Central Maine Growth Council

This city gave me what I have today, so Portland will always be my home. I love this city and its communities, and I look forward to continuing to grow with it.
— Mike Mwenedata, Founder and CEO, Rwanda Bean Co.

We have an incredible opportunity to pounce on a growing, niche space launch market while demonstrating to the world that space transport can be done in a more Earth-responsible way.
— Sascha Deri, Founder and CEO, bluShift Aerospace Inc.

During COVID, it’s a time of crisis, but also a time of learning. There’s opportunities for greater connections to culture, community, systems and services.
— Lisa Sockabasin, Director of programs and external affairs, Wabanaki Public Health & Wellness
