A year ago, we were just grappling with the start of the pandemic. As fortune would have it, our Business Leaders of the Year were just being announced. We had no idea what that would entail, but were heartened to see that the leaders chosen last year quickly adapted and showed their mettle.
Central Maine Healthcare CEO Jeff Brickman, who was being cited for leading the turnaround of the hospital group, was now leading a massive shift to prepare for COVID-19 cases. Kristen Miale, president of Good Shepherd Food Bank, was being cited for expanding the nonprofit’s reach, but in the pandemic accelerated efforts to raise money and help the growing number of Mainers facing food insecurity. STARC Systems Chairman Tim Hebert, who was cited for creating innovative containment systems used at hospitals, adapted the systems to make “isolation rooms” for COVID patients and hospital staff. The Downs’ developer, Roccy Risbara, was credited for redeveloping Scarborough Downs, and through the pandemic was able to keep projects on track even as social distancing protocols changed how construction was being done.
We didn’t foresee any of this — even that these CEOs would rise to the occasion. My only point is that good leaders rise to the challenge.
This year, we have another group of exemplary leaders. We have the track record of what they did in the initial months of the pandemic. Each has a different story, but we think you’ll find them compelling and inspirational leaders.
