St. Dominic Academy, a private college preparatory school with campuses in Lewiston and Auburn, announced on Monday that it has exceeded its goal of raising $300,000 in a campaign to provide tuition assistance to families in need at this difficult time.
The 2020 Jean-Dion Match Challenge passed the $300,000 mark last week, with contributors donating more than $100,000, and three alumni from the classes of 1960, 1961 and 1972 matching and doubling each dollar, raising the total to $300,000-plus.
Alumni who contributed were Ray Jean of the class of 1960, Louise Jean of the class of 1961 and Don Dion of the class of 1972. The amounts come on top of an endowment the Jeans established at the Catholic Foundation of Maine in memory of Louise’s mother, Laurianne Cormier.
“The money raised through the Jean-Dion Match Challenge will help parents pay for this year’s tuition and help secure future tuition assistance needs,” said St. Dominic Academy President Timothy Gallic in Monday's news release
"Our unwavering goals are to keep all of our students, provide a well-tuned remote learning program, and meet all the needs of our learning community. Educating students, pre-K through grade 12, in the faith is essential in today’s world and must be available to all who desire it," he added.
Chowdah for a good cause anyone?
Congdon's Family Restaurant & Bakery in Wells, which is known for its doughnuts and just reopened for business after a temporary shutdown, will shift its attention one day this week for a charity fundraiser.
On Wednesday afternoon, servers will be dishing out fish chowder, clam chowder and lobster bisque to raise money for Good Shepherd Food Bank. The event is set to kick off at 4 p.m. and last until the food runs out.
Customers can order at the Congdon's drive-thru or take-out window. Congdon's will also be collecting dry food items to donate to the Food Bank, an Auburn-based nonprofit headed by Kristen Miale, a 2020 Mainebiz Business Leader of the Year.
"Every dollar will go directly to Good Shepherd Food Bank," said Congdon's owner Gary Leech, in a news release. "Times are tough right now, people are hurting, and there are huge demands on local and state food pantries. We just wanted to help in some way and there's a lot of great organizations helping."
There is no set price for Wednesday's event, but donations of all amounts are welcome.
All chowder will be served cold so that it can be enjoyed safely at home, and individuals unable to leave their homes can request delivery by emailing chowderfest2020@gmail.com
Oakhurst Dairy, Shields Meats and Produce Inc, Southern Maine Masonic Lodges, Mike's Clam Shack and Bluebird Ranch Family Restaurant have donated money, supplies and ingredients for the event.
Leech said local Mason Bob Hoyt has been integral to the planning, execution and coordinating of the fundraiser.
Congdon's is at 1090 Post Road (U.S. Route 1) in Wells. Find out more about Wednesday's event here.
