Gas company pays $235,000 in rebates

The Maine Public Utilities Commission has ordered Northern Utilities, the state's largest natural gas supplier, to pay more than $235,000 for customer rebates and about $170,000 more for improved meter-reading technology.

The PUC issued the penalties after the company estimated the gas usage of many customers between 2004 and 2007, resulting in inaccurate bills that later had to be reconciled, according to the PUC.

Northern Utilities has begun installing new automated systems that can read customer gas meters remotely once a month. The rebates will amount to a little more than $9 per customer.
