Giving Notebook: Bank funding for scholarships, nonprofits across Northern New England

Bar Harbor Bank & Trust has awarded $9,000 in scholarships to nine recent high school graduates from Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont with strong career promise.

The $1,000 scholarship awards were presented to students who attended a technical career program as part of their high school curriculum and are planning to further their education at a college or a technical school.
 
This year’s scholarship recipients will be eligible to apply for an additional $1,000 next year to be used towards a second year of college or technical school.

The 2023 scholarship recipients include five from Maine. The full list includes:

  • Maryssa Cavallaro of Bath, a graduate of Morse High School who attended Bath Regional Career & Technical Center and plans to study social work at the University of Maine;
  • Lindsey Cook of Canaan, N.H., a graduate of Mascoma Valley Regional High School and attended Hartford Area Career & Technology Center and will to study cosmetology at Aveda Institute.
  • Hannah Edwards of Washington, N.H.,  a graduate of Hillsboro-Deering High School who attended Concord Regional Technical Center and will study history and education at Suffolk University.
  • Rachel Endre of Lamoine, a graduate of Ellsworth High School who attended Hancock County Technical Center and will study criminal justice at Eastern Maine Community College.
  • Colin Gagner of Fairlee, Vt.,, a graduate of Rivendell Academy who attended Hartford Area Career & Technology Center and will study illustration at Rochester Institute of Technology.
  • Annabelle Hackett of Ellsworth, a graduate of Ellsworth High School who attended Hancock County Technical Center plans to study marketing at Husson University.
  • Ashlynn Hamel of Wilder, Vt.,, a graduate of Hartford High School who attended Hartford Area Career & Technology Center and will study cosmetology at Keene Beauty School or Northeast School of Hair Design; 
  • Sienna Ingalls of East Machias, a graduate of Machias Memorial High School who attended Coastal Washington County Institute of Technology who will study health science/EMS at Southern Maine Community College; and 
  • Alaska Marzilli of Orono, a graduate of Orono High School who attended United Technology Center and will study biomedical sciences at the University of New England.

Bar Harbor Bank & Trust, owned by Bar Harbor Bankshares (NYSE: BHB), is No. 3 on a list of the largest Maine-based banks published in the 2023 Mainebiz Book of the Lists. Banks were ranked by assets of June 30, 2022.

Bangor Savings grants for 23 nonprofits 

In other bank giving news, the Bangor Savings Bank Foundation granted $195,000 to 23 nonprofit organizations in Northern New England recognized for uplifting their communities. 

The foundation selects grant applicants committed to enhancing local education, social and civic services, culture and arts, economic and workforce development, and health and wellness, boosting the region's overall vitality.

Grant recipients include Bangor-based Northern Light Acadia Hospital, a psychiatric health care provider that was awarded $200,000 towards construction of a 50-bed inpatient facility. The funds will be distributed over five years.
