Good Shepherd Food Bank has awarded $1.5 million to 417 groups it works with statewide, including food pantries and shelter programs, the Auburn-based nonprofit announced Tuesday.
About $1 million went to 276 food pantries, meal sites and shelter programs, while $123,370 was distributed to 31 health care partners and $280,000 to 110 school programs and after-school partners.
Grant awards were determined based on the number of people served and their program types. Awards ranged from $500 to $20,230, with an average grant amount of $3,570.
Funds were awarded in all 16 Maine counties through the Good Shepherd's Capacity Building Grant program, which to help partners meet community needs and transform food access.
“Our partner network is delivering so much more than food,” stated Kristen Miale, president of Good Shepherd Food Bank and a 2020 Mainebiz Business Leader of the Year. “They’re the reassuring smile, a quick check-in to see how someone is doing, an affirmation that someone cares."
Underscoring that the Food Bank could not do its work without its partners, she added, "Through their amazing dedication and hard work, 15.3 million meals have been distributed to Mainers struggling with hunger. That’s a 34% increase over the same time last year, which was pre-pandemic.”
Grants to nonprofit organizations that serve disadvantaged, underserved and/or vulnerable communities in Maine are available from Maine Community Foundation's Frances Hollis Brain Foundation Fund.
A total of $157,500 was awarded through the fund in 2020 to organizations including Maine Equal Justice Partners to help Mainers meet basic needs and the Maine Resilience Building Network for scholarship funds.
David and Frances Brain established the Frances Hollis Brain Foundation in 1993 to address social issues and encourage the family’s future generations to contribute to the well-being of communities in Maine, Georgia and Kentucky.
Maine Community Foundation is headquartered in Ellsworth, with additional personnel in Portland, Dover-Foxcroft, Rockport and Mars Hill.
The organization works with donors and other partners to provide strong investments, personalized service, local expertise, and strategic giving to improve the quality of life for all Maine people.
Applications for this year's Brain Foundation Fund grants are due by April 1. Online applications, guidelines and a complete list of grants are available on the Maine Community Foundation website.
