MEGA Industries, a Gorham-based manufacturer, has received a $1.2 million contract to manufacture components for what could become the world’s largest nuclear fusion reactor.
The new contract was announced on Monday by Anania & Associates Investment Co., a Maine-based investment firm that holds MEGA as a portfolio company.
According to the investment firm, MEGA will produce test equipment and coaxial components for a fusion reactor being constructed in France. The reactor is expected to become the world’s largest nuclear fusion reactor when it launches in 2027.
The project is being led by ITER, a major, decades-in-the-making nuclear fusion research project led by a consortium of several international entities, including the European Union, India, South Korea and the United States. ITER previously stood for International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor and is now referred to as the Latin word for “the way.”
The Bangor Daily News reported that MEGA will add two engineers and three machinists to its 46-employee workforce as a result of the contract. The company’s coaxial components will be used by an India-based research group to test the “plumbing” system of the reactor’s power source, the newspaper noted.
