Grant to help business owners impacted by mill layoffs and closings in Jay and Madison
Business owners affected by mill layoffs and closings in Jay and Madison will get help from the Maine Small Business Development Centers through a grant program designed for economically distressed areas.
The $100,000 Portable Assistance Grant, funding by the U.S. Small Business Administration, will help provide training and other assistance for business owners and potential business owners in Madison and Jay. The Madison Paper Industries mill in Madison closed in March 2016; the Androscoggin Mill in Jay has laid off hundreds in the past year.
Collaborating on the program will be Coastal Enterprises Inc., Androscoggin Valley Council of Governments, New Ventures Maine and other local economic development organizations, according to a news release from the Maine SBDC. The program is designed to equip entrepreneurs and anyone interested in starting a business with information necessary for successfully developing and growing a small business.
“This grant will provide targeted resources to enable us to enhance critical services to potential and existing businesses in both the Madison and Jay areas," said Mark Delisle, Maine SBDC state director.
Maine SBDC will also host a free Business Essentials workshop series in each town, which began Monday, Nov. 6.
It will provide grants for professional services to small business clients, available beginning Nov. 15, as well as host a small business resource and networking event, develop area-specific resource materials and host specialized training in each area.
