The Greater Portland Immigrant Welcome Center has been awarded a $10,000 grant from the People of Color Fund of the Maine Community Foundation to fund the expansion of the “iEnglish Project: A Digital Language Literacy Program.”
With this grant, satellite digital language labs will be set up in Milbridge and Lewiston.
English language proficiency is an essential gateway to economic opportunity and to workforce and social integration for immigrants. The iEnglish Project at the Immigrant Welcome Center delivers customized, efficient language instruction that benefits immigrants and the companies that employ them.
The iEnglish Project is both personalized and highly scalable, making it a powerful solution to Maine’s current workforce development challenges, the Portland-based nonprofit said in its news release. The iEnglish Project is powered by Voxy, a cloud-based digital language learning platform that enables learners to achieve English language proficiency relevant to their specific career and employment goals.
Located at 24 Preble St. in Portland, the Greater Portland Immigrant Welcome Center is a nonprofit that serves as a hub of collaboration to strengthen and empower the immigrant community through language acquisition, economic integration and civic engagement. For more information about the Greater Portland Immigrant Welcome Center and its programs, visit its website, email info@welcomeimmigrant.org, or call the office at (207) 517-3401.
