Belgrade-based Hammond Lumber Co. is expanding to the midcoast region with the acquisition of three stores from Sanford-based New England Building Materials.
Hammond Lumber will take over New England Building Materials' locations in Boothbay Harbor, Damariscotta and Pemaquid later this month, according to a press release. Hammond has nine locations primarily in the central Maine region, and the new stores will extend the company's retail presence. The majority of the employees at the three locations will become employees of Hammond, while others will be transferred to New England Building Materials' Sanford location. "We feel strongly that investing in a permanent presence will give us the opportunity to provide more of the personalized service that drives our customer service excellence," said Vice President Mike Hammond. Founded in 1953, Hammond Lumber has stores in Auburn, Bangor, Belgrade, Brunswick, Fairfield, Farmington, Greenville, Portland and Skowhegan.
New England Building Materials, which prior to the announcement had eight locations in Massachusetts and Maine, will focus on the larger markets of eastern Massachusetts and southern Maine. The company plans to close its locations in Windham and Springvale and bring the work to its 40-acre Sanford campus, according to the release.
