Japan contract revives Biddeford boatbuilder

General Marine Inc. is rehiring idled workers to build boats for Japanese fishermen affected by this year's tsunami.

The Biddeford boatbuilder has been tapped to make 20 fishing vessels to be used to drag nets to catch fish, or tend to seaweed and oyster farms, according to The Associated Press. The 19-foot boats will go to two Japanese fishing guilds that together lost 5,000 boats in the natural disaster. Operation Blessing International helped General Marine win the work, which will allow the company to call back six to eight workers idled by the poor economy, owner Stacey Raymond told the news service.

General Marine makes both working and recreational boats.
