Hannaford Supermarkets and shopping delivery service Instacart have partnered to offer same-day grocery delivery from many of the state's Hannaford stores.

Scarborough-based Hannaford announced the partnership Monday, saying it's a way to expand the ways in which customers across New England and New York "can access fresh groceries and household essentials."

In Maine, the service will be available at 43 of its 65 stores, primarily in southern Maine and Bangor. (See sidebar for list of stores that won't have the service.) Instacart, based in San Francisco, has similar partnerships with more than 400 national, regional and local chains and stores, including Shaw's Supermarkets in Maine.

Hannaford said the partnership will also complement its curbside service and a store-based delivery option currently offered at 12 locations in Massachusetts and New York. Customers can choose same-day delivery or order up to two weeks in advance. All Instacart orders default to “Leave at My Door Delivery,” to ensure social distancing. .

“We’re excited to rapidly expand same-day delivery service through our partnership with the Instacart Marketplace,” said Maile Buker, vice president of marketing for Hannaford. He said the service addresses growing customer demand for more convenient shopping service options.

Instacart customers pay a fee for individual deliveries, or pay a yearly or monthly subscription fee, which includes free delivery of orders $35 or more. The customer places an order online, similar to curbside pickup or Hannaford-to-Go, and a "personal shopper" picks out the groceries to be delivered.

While Instacart is available to more than 85% of households in the U.S. and more than 70% of households in Canada, according to the website, not all customers of the stores with the service will be able to access delivery from Hannaford, which is determined by the company's delivery range.

For instance, the two Hannaford stores in Augusta will offer the service, as well the two in Waterville. Many customers in ZIP codes adjacent to both cities are in Instacart's delivery area. But other towns nearby, for instance in Belgrade, where residents shop in both cities, aren't eligible.

Andrew Nodes, vice president of retail for Instacart, said that people across the country are increasingly turning to online shopping. "We know they want to be able to get those goods from their favorite local retailer," he said in the release. "We’re proud to partner with Hannaford and make it easier for their customers to get the groceries and goods they need delivered from the store to their door in as fast as an hour.

“Grocery delivery has quickly become an essential part of people’s day to day lives, and we’re committed to ensuring our retail partners have an online solution that supports the needs of their customers who have trusted them for generations," Nodes said.

Customers can find out if they qualify by typing their ZIP code into Instacart.com.

Hannafords Rewards participants can continue to use that service as well, and can add their Rewards number to their Instacart profile.

Hannaford offers its Hannaford-to-Go option and curbside pickup at 85 stores in New England and New York, and will add 16 stores by the end of the year, the company said. It also offers Hannaford-to-Go delivery in 12 locations in New York and Massachusetts, and plans to expand to 19 more locations by the end of the year.
