Hannaford store in Turner to proceed
The state's highest court has cleared Hannaford Bros. Co. to build a new store in Turner, dismissing an appeal of the project by area residents.
The Supreme Judicial Court last week upheld a superior court decision to reject an appeal of the proposed supermarket at the corner of Route 4 and Snell Hill Road, the Sun Journal reported. The town approved the store in April 2010, after which a group of residents appealed the decision to the Androscoggin County Superior Court. Led by Philip and Susan Bizier, the group argued the 36,000-square-foot store was too big for the neighborhood and would cause traffic problems. The superior court, however, in March decided it was appropriately scaled for the area. The Supreme Court also found the town's approval met local ordinances.
Hannaford plans to break ground next spring and hopes to open the store in the winter of 2014.
