The Passamaquoddy Tribe is advancing its plans to build a $25 million water bottling plant at Indian Township and create 96 full-time jobs.
Tribal Gov. Joseph Socabasin said the tribe has nearly completed lining up investors for the plant, which would be the only Native American-owned water bottling company in North America if the project is realized, the Bangor Daily News reported. The water will come from a spring water aquifer on tribal land in Washington County and initially marketed to Native American-owned casinos and hotel chains as private-label water. Eventually, the tribe hopes to sell the water retail under the name Passamaquoddy Blue. The product could become available as early as next fall.
The project still needs permits from the Maine Department of Agriculture, the Maine Department of Environmental Protection and the Maine Drinking Water Program. Besides private investors, the tribe could also seek funding from the U.S. Bureau of Indian Affairs.
