Health data exchange system gaining momentum

The state’s health care sector is benefiting from a statewide system of gathering and sharing health information through the Portland-based nonprofit Maine HealthInfoNet, the St. John Valley Times reported.

HIE went live in 2009 and now contains records for nearly all Maine residents. It is connected to the majority of health care facilities in the state.

Health data transparency is on-trend. CompareMaine — a product of the Maine Health Data Organization, a state agency that collects healthcare data from health insurance companies and hospitals — is a similar initiative that shows the average cost of common health care procedures at different facilities in Maine, as well as patient experience ratings and how Maine hospitals compare on patient safety.

According to the federal website healthdata.gov, "liberating" health data through the Health Data Initiative helps the public and industry innovators, ultimately unleashing “the power of private-sector innovators and entrepreneurs” to utilize data to create applications, products, services and features that help improve health and health care, while also helping to create jobs.
