Health education gets $500,000 boost

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has awarded two grants to organizations in Maine to improve access to health care training.

Husson University will receive $251,000 for its two new advanced nursing programs that will provide training in emerging technologies and the latest medical advances, according to a press release from U.S. Rep. Mike Michaud. Additionally, Penobscot Community Health Care will receive a $250,000 grant to establish a nurse practitioner residency program in conjunction with Husson. The program will provide students with additional clinical experience following a two-year university nurse practitioner program. Husson also plans to expand distance education for its new nursing education courses, ensuring that 25% of the students come from rural and underserved areas of Maine.

"These programs will expand training and educational opportunities, which will go a long way toward increasing access to quality health care for Mainers," Michaud said in the release.
